Building Blocks of Safety
Be Clear
Safety expectations need to be set, communicated to everyone, and integrated into every department of an organization.
Responsibility
Share the responsibility. The belief that each individual should act responsibly for the good of all fellow employees.
Accountability
Be held accountable and lead by example. A leader’s behavior influences those around them. All individuals should be accountable for safety, and not look the other way when a hazard or dangerous situation is spotted.
Ethics
Employees need to make decisions that not only satisfy the procedures in the safety manual but that are also ethical and moral. Team attitude will make or break a strong safety culture.
Next Steps
Making sure you have input from every level of your business, survey your work areas and note areas where hazards and accidents may occur. Routinely monitor your safety practices and update as necessary.
