Addiction and The Workplace
August 31st is International Overdose Awareness Day. This month in #workcompwednesday we will post some sobering statistics regarding addiction in the workplace.
Addiction is a mental disorder that compels someone to repeatedly use substances or engage in behaviors even though they have harmful consequences. Addictions destroy marriages, friendships, and careers and threaten a person’s basic health and safety.
- Opioid misuse in Michigan has increased significantly since 2000. In 2018 there were more drug overdoses than car crashes in Michigan.
- Nationwide approximately 16 percent of emergency room patients injured at work have alcohol in their system.
- More than 70 percent of persons abusing illicit drugs in America are employed and cost companies $81 billion every year.
If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction and you need more information about what to do and where to go call 1-800-662-HELP (4357) the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA) Hotline. They are always there and can connect you with local resources.
