We’ve Only Just Begun

Just as Karen Carpenter sings “We’ve only just begun…”

The snow has begun to fall.  Marquette hit a new record. The Oct. 25 daily snowfall total, which was previously set with 3.1 inches of snow back in 1976. Marquette blew past that in a big way on Sunday, recording 8.3 inches of snow, and more is expected.

As winter approaches and snow, sleet, and ice all pose a risk of slip and fall accidents. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, slip and fall injuries are the third largest cause of workplace injuries, with the average costs being $28,000. The National Safety Council states that slips and falls are the single largest cause of emergency room visits.

You can help prevent serious slip and fall injuries this season by following these safety tips:

Dress appropriately for winter weather

  • avoid high heels and smooth soles
  • wear boots or overshoes

Walk like a duck

  • slow down and take smaller steps

Remove snow from the bottom of your shoes before entering a building

  • use walk-off mats

Place warning signs before a wet area

  • clean up wet floors immediately

Identify areas that are subject to icing where employees park and walk

  • review with your snow removal contractor
  • use appropriate products in these areas
